When looking at producing a top Douro white, the focus was set upon the idea of blending our finest, traditional white Douro varieties and allowing them to integrate in perfect harmony with oak to reinforce its structure and generate more complexity. Carvalhas Branco was born in 2010 through our winemakers ambitious approach to the small parcels of white grapes located at one of Quinta das Carvalhas’ highest spots, where the varieties Viosinho and Gouveio benefit from a higher altitude (400m) and cool breezes which are perfect for a good quality ripening of white grapes.
In 2010, we produced the first Carvalhas Branco. The year provided us with the freshness and aromatic expression, desirable for the launch of a new Douro white. The presence of Viosinho offered the wine the structure, its generous character, as it is a grape known for its good capacity to interact with oak, while Gouveio presented the wine with the freshness, minerality, elegance and acidity. With this blend we achieved the perfect balance for a magnificent Douro white.
It presents a clean, bright, citric colour and intense yet delicate aromas of fruit combined with vanilla, derivative of its ageing in oak. Although full-bodied, its freshness and lively acidity induces a sense of subtleness, finishing with persistency and extensively flavourful. The Carvalhas Branco (White) has much potential for ageing in bottle as well as revealing itself very gastronomical.
