Quinta das Carvalhas is the most emblematic and spectacular property in the Douro Valley. Written references regarding this magnificent vineyard can be traced back to 1759. Enjoying a prominent position on the left bank of the Douro river, in Pinhão, the estate covers the entire hillside facing the Douro river and occupies part of the slopes of the right bank of the tributary Torto river.
This magnificent property exceeds one thousand acres of land, integrating 300 acres of vineyards, among woods and olive trees. Its beautiful lanscape provides a unique view of the valley, enjoying a scenic private road to the top of the hill, through vineyards and gardens, where the property’s guesthouse is located, offering a 360º panoramic view.
Since the 1950’s, the Estate has been property of the Silva Reis family, also proprietors of Real Companhia Velha, the oldest company in Portugal, founded by Royal Charter of King D. José I in 1756.
The manor house is located by the river, surrounded by vineyards that start from 80 meters (above sea level) up to 400 meters. High altitude vineyards privilege white grapes, which benefit from a cooler climate and fresher breezes, contributing to craft the level of acidity and minerality that typifies the complex white wines of Carvalhas, rich in character and freshness. Red grapes are located on the lower lands, gaining from the northern to southern sun exposure that provides deep intense Ports and Douro wines filled with character and elegance.
From the entire vineyard, 75 acres are old vines. Some of them, post-phylloxera plantations are reaching the respectful age of a century. Those old vines are high-density blend field plantations of the traditional grape varietais indigenous to the Douro, which include over 20 different varietais, corresponding to the ancestral way of plantation in the valley.
Carvalhas is also a great example of sustainable agriculture in the Douro valley, using the best viticulture practices, and thourought the biodiversity program that has been implemented, the property offers tours for tourists. Visitors can enjoy the vineyards, landscape and other activities such as bird watching, natural flora identification and walking tracks.
The eco-system service provided by this great environment, has made a major contribution to the reduction of natural diseases in the vines and consequently minimising the use of pesticides, contributing to the production of profitable and “healthy” grapes, while at the same time preserving the environment.
These are essential conditions which will be passed on to future generations – a clean, organised and safe place – where fauna and flora can co-exist in harmony with human presence, leaving nature to take its own course without major interference.
