On September 10, 1756, by Royal Charter of King Joseph I, under the auspices of his Prime Minister, Sebastião de Carvalho e Melo, Count of Oeiras and Marquis of Pombal, the General Company of Agriculture of the Vineyards of the Alto Douro was established, also known as the Royal Oporto Wine Company.
